The Power of Massage Therapy

5/29/2012

Having a Type A personality already makes me carry stress in general. Add in a chronic illness and you're looking at an extremely tightly wound body. With Lyme disease I can not stress the importance of Massage. I'm so sore all the time, my joints hurt, back hurts, muscles spasm, the list goes on. Nothing feels better than a nice long massage to repair the damage your body endures. But that's not even the reason it's so important...it's most famously used to stimulate the lymphatic system and remove toxins from the body. We all have toxins, healthy or not. That's why after getting a professional massage they give you a cup of water & urge you to drink lots of water that day. Detoxing with Lyme disease is crucial, you can't possibly do it enough. A massage is a double whammy for pain & cleansing. Not to mention relaxing the mind & body if you have insomnia like myself.

I get my massage weekly by an amazing massage therapist who comes over & sets up shop in my home. It makes my Mondays feel so much better and adds a much needed boost for the week ahead.

I highly recommend getting frequent massages, and speaking with your therapist about the exact needs you are looking for. My therapist worked with a chronic Lyme patient before so that was an added bonus & blessing that I found her. My body feels more relaxed, the tension I hold is slowly improving. Every small step you can take to ease pain or assist the process is crucial.

Nestlé Benecalorie Nutrition Weight Gain Supplement

Although most people are trying to lose weight, those with chronic illnesses tend to need to gain weight. Usually the problem is the disease itself, or the medicine causes nausea & GI issues. Some days you can't eat at all, and over time the stomach shrinks so even on "good days" you can't eat much. Slowly but surely the pounds come off.

In my case I am allergic to soy & whey so the weight gaining drinks can't work. They also have lots of sugar which is the #1 no no for the diet. For others they sit very heavy and don't work on a gentle stomach.

Just recently by the grace of God I was pointed toward a wonderful product called Benecalorie. Each one ounce serving cup has 330 calories. You can easily put it in a smoothie and instantly make it 600 calories. Half a days worth of food. It mixes into anything. Mashed potatoes, pudding, any other food really. It's made up of made different fats. No whey, no gluten, no sugar, no soy, nothing that could cause allergy & super versatile.

I had searched for supplemental nutrition for years & I have no idea how I just NOW found it, but I credit God. So I wanted to share this with anyone else who is struggling with an illness or Lyme that needs healthy calories in small servings. It's been a life saver for me.

God bless,

Losing weight with Lyme disease

When people say the grass is greener on the other side they could not possibly be more correct. Those who have slow metabolisms would do anything to be able to eat whatever & stay skinny. For me however, my extremely fast metabolism has been more of a curse than a blessing. It used to be nice that I could eat whatever, whenever & stay so small, until my stomach turned into a hot mess & eating a lot wasn't an option. My weight quickly started dropping & now I find myself weighing 87 pounds & feeling really lost as to how I got here.

Chronic illnesses put a huge strain on the body. It's working to fight off pathogens with your immune system, and at the same time give you the calories your body needs to survive. Treatment hasn't been nearly as easy breezy as I had expected. I'm really not sure where I got the idea that it would be simple, but I think my positive thinking talked my subconscious in to  it. The current goal is to somehow raise my weight up to a stable place & then I can worry about resuming treatment. The last thing I need right now is a feeding tube I can guarantee you that.

The catch here is I can't eat gluten, sugar, caffeine, & limited dairy. Oh & no fried foods either. Hmm... I always wondered when someone would develop a pill to slow down your metabolism. We have about 200 products out there to speed it up.

Anyways that's what's currently happening, I'm certainly hoping my next post isn't somewhere in a hospital bed. Yuck. Wish me luck!

Funding for Lyme Testing

5/14/2012

Exciting news for the Lyme community! A friend shared this link which made me SO excited. Specialized tests through iGenX, Fry laboratories, & a few other smaller labs are extremely expensive. They are the most accurate tests out there, but not covered by insurance. A lot of patients can't afford to pay the $400 or more to get them run, leading them to not get a proper diagnosis.

Recently iGenX made a huge donation to start a program up called Lyme-TAP (Test Access Program). This program provides funding to patients nationwide to be able to get these tests. It's working on a first come first serve basis, and children under 18 are a priority. This program covers up to 75% of the cost, which is HUGE! Nothing of the sort has come about in the Lyme community, so they are leading the way to pave the road for other labs to get on board. Getting a diagnosis is the hardest part, and many times the cost of testing is a major deterrent.

Another step in the right direction :)
