Weighting Comforts was founded by Donna Durham, MMFT, who was pursuing her Master's degree in marriage and family therapy when she saw first hand how helpful weighted blankets could be. An advisor in her program asked her to make several weighted blankets for clients who suffered from anxiety, and they all immediately noticed a sense of relief. This began the road to creating Weighting Comforts with her co-founder Josh Durham.
What makes Weighting Comforts special and stand out of the pack is that each and every blanket is sewn by an international refugee through Sew For Hope. Sew For Hope is a non-profit that provides sewing machines and classes for refugees that have been resettled in Middle Tennessee. They are allowing these individuals to make a living through artistry and skill and are making a huge different in the lives of all of these families. I was so impressed by this detail, and I think it's incredible that Weighting Comforts is focused on charity and quality, while helping their customers soothe anxiety, insomnia, depression & more.
What Is A Weighted Blanket?
Weighted blankets benefit users just like a deep tissue massage. The pressure or the blanket aids in releasing serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a hormone in our bodies that gives us a sense of well being. Some of that serotonin becomes melatonin which helps us relax and go to sleep. Simply put, weighted blankets are calming, cozy and comforting. It is often used to help with anxiety, an overactive nervous system (children with autism), insomnia, depression, stress, or just as a way to help unwind a busy mind.
When I received my blanket and opened the box the first thing which struck me was how soft the fabric was which is made from 100% cotton fabric and 100% polyester thread. When I lifted it out of the box I was so impressed with how well dispersed the weight was, as it made the blanket so easy to maneuver. Some weighted blankets have squares which are too large and the beads inside move around a lot, making the blanket feel bulky and uneven in weight. The Weighted Comforts blanket however has smaller 5" pockets with FDA-approved non-irritating PVC compound filling. It felt so easy to lift and get cozy with on my bed. The 15lb weight felt perfect! It draped on my body and felt like the most comforting soft hug. The fabric is cool, soft and very breathable, while having a very even weight so it was very easy to nap with! It didn't take long for my stress to slowly melt away and my mind to calm down. It's truly amazing what a weighted blanket can do for your overall wellbeing. It's a stunning experience for me each time, and I'm amazed at how soothing it feels. I struggle a lot with anxiety and an overactive nervous system, so this blanket was a huge blessing. Everything about this blanket was so well done, from the quality craftsmanship to the care they put into selecting pure fabrics. It was a wonderful experience, and oh so soothing!
